Mercedes A45 AMG (2015) still relevant today?

Six years old, the initial Mercedes-AMG A45s are beginning to look reasonably affordable. Is now the right time to own one?

The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit produces 360hp and a generous 332lb ft of torque is faster than a Porsche 911. The Mercedes A45 AMG with the help of a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive would sprint from 0 – 100km/h at 4.3 seconds only.

Unlike other A-Class models, the Mercedes A45 AMG has body-hugging seats that give a heavy hint to its sporting credentials. Practicality isn’t its strong suit, however, so there isn’t much space for tall adults to get comfy in the back and the small rear windows mean it can feel a little claustrophobic.

Priced at RM349,000 (OTR without insurance) when launched, A45 AMG is one of the most hardcore and most wanted hot hatch from Mercedes-Benz Malaysia. Today a used 2015 model is sold from RM205,000 – RM220,000 as sourced from carlist.my

Last year in 2020, Mercedes replaces the aging A45 AMG with a completely new AMG A45S 4MATIC from the AMG-Enhanced 2.0L Inline-4 Turbo engine producing 421hp and puts out 500Nm of torque, for a 0-100km/h of just 3.9 seconds (previously 4.3 seconds). The seven-speed dual clutch is replaced by AMG Speedshift DCT 8-speed Dual-Clutch transmission. AMG SPEEDSHIFT® technology. Able to change gears faster than a human can shift a traditional manual gearbox, its shift paddles and rev-matched downshifts provide instant response. In addition to a Manual mode, it has two automatic modes, Comfort and Sport.

Like all high-performance Mercedes, the A45 has very specific servicing requirements.

The maintenance on the AMG A45 is proved to be relatively durable motor however there are still few common issues including the turbo and the dual clutch box to be inspected. The A45 is relatively light but heavy braking eats through discs and pads. Check them visually and through the on-board command system. Should you be considering one today , a full service history is a good place to start and if it’s wearing budget rubber, walk away. Alternatively, the Audi RS3 which comes out later is designed to rival the Mercedes in the hot-hatch segment.
